With all the record setting firearm statistics being presented on a nearly daily basis here in 2020, what are the most popular? We will break this down by category, the top-selling from each, and a final overall winner.
1. Semi-Auto Handguns: Glock 19
With handguns seeing the largest share of the 2020 gun rush, no matter which data you look at, the common winner among them all is the Glock 19.
With self-defense as the top priority for new gun buyers this year, the Glock 19 checks off many every day carry requirements that buyers are looking for. The Glock 19 has been a staple for EDC since its inception in 1988. Some major attributes of this firearm are:
- Concealability
- Handling
- Capacity
In close company regarding sales numbers, and for many of the same reasons, the Sig Sauer P365 and the Springfield Hellcat 9MM have also been popular options.
2. Semi-Automatic Rifles: Smith and Wesson M&P 15
Again, with a focus on self-defense and civil unrest, no other rifle gets as much attention as the AR-15 platform. It is the number 1 selling platform for this reason. Many users are building their own or buying various manufacturer variants, the Smith and Wesson M&P 15 is the top seller (including all of its variants). Why the Smith and Wesson M&P 15?
- It is the most mass-produced AR-15 model.
- Beginner Friendly to Pro Level variants available.
- A wide pricing range between $450 and $1500.
The next model we see repeatedly among reports is the Ruger AR-556. This is another quality, budget-friendly, model by a well-known manufacturer that has seen regular availability throughout the pandemic.
To note, the Anderson Manufacturing AM-15 may soon bump the Smith and Wesson M&P 15 as number 1.
3. Semi-Automatic Shotgun: TS 12 Tavor
For the tactical shot blasting, slug slinging, and door breaching crowd – semi-automatic shotguns have been another top choice here in 2020. At the top of the sales list is the TS 12 Tavor. The TS 12 Tavor has a 15 round capacity in a bull-pup configuration. The design is both innovative and compact. Some of these aspects are:
- A High-Capacity design without the use of magazines or crazy loading apparatuses.
- Very little recoil.
- A direct competitor to the Kel-Tec KSG.

While they consider this shotgun advanced and it hit the top of many sales lists (even though it has a hefty price tag), the Benelli M4 is still a very popular option, sitting right behind the TS 12 in sales.
4. Bolt-Action Rifle: Remington 700
I’ll admit, I expected to see the Remington 870 at the top of the Pump Shotgun list (it isn’t, the Mossberg 590 is), the classic and wildly popular Remington 700 is still holding its crown in the bolt-action category. This is a well-known bolt-action platform that is widely used by deer hunters but has also seen military service as a sniper rifle. The 700 is available in nearly every popular caliber, long/short action types, configurations, and has massive aftermarket support.
5. Revolver: Colt Python
When researching the most powerful, accurate, and problem-free pistol platforms – the revolver will usually wind up being the center of that conversation. The Colt Python was popular when it was first introduced, but production ceased for some years. At the 2020 Shot Show they reintroduced it. After some relaunch hiccups, the platform is in solid operating order and has seen wild popularity this year.
At the same time, and with sales nearing that of the Python, the Heritage Arms Rough Rider, Taurus 856, Ruger SP101, and the Ruger LCR round out the top 5 in this category.
Who Is the Overall Winner?
No matter how you slice it or dice it, the Glock 19 is the obvious overall winner. It seems American’s have chosen this well-known platform as the number one personal defense platform, and personal defense purchases are the number 1 driving factor in 2020 gun sales.
